The Lab.EES facility is currently conducting testing of environmental samples for teaching and research purposes, in the following areas:

  • Microbial testing for specific pathogen indicators including total coliform, E. coli, and Enterococcus

  • Total organic carbon analysis with total nitrogen module, autosampler, and sediment sampling add-ons

  • Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)

  • Specific ion probes for nitrate, ammonia, fluoride, and sodium

  • Environmentally-relevant organics including endocrine-disrupting compounds, antibiotics, hormones, and pharmaceutically-active substances, and also for characterizing treatment byproducts

  • Specific contaminants using diode-array spectrophotometry

  • Gravimetric analysis

  • Photochemical testing with a custom-built 550W ultraviolet source

  • Aquatic water quality parameters using portable field testing meters

  • Two-person research vessel "RV Minnow"

The facility is developing the capability to conduct testing in the following areas, in the near future:

  • Trace metal analysis, including 16 different elements, using the Perkin Elmer 3100 AAS with HGA-600 graphite furnace and AS-60 autosampler and ICP-AS

  • Acute/chronic toxicity bioassay
